It's true. Our student led community is comprised of a diverse body of students who come from the metro New York tri-state area, but also from an international community, as well as from across the United States.
Once they ascend the Mountain, they bond into a family and are supported by a caring faculty and staff.
The friendships formed last long beyond the years spent at Storm King. Visit Facebook and you will see relationships that have lasted decades, and this is just part of the tradition of a Storm King education. It happens under the watchful eye of "Mother Mountain," so named a century ago.
Our strong academic program develops students' intellectual abilities, and is supported by experiential activities that go beyond the classroom. Please look at the videos on our homepage. They were authored using collaborative technology by our students, faculty, and staff. We did the entire production in house. That is a truly "experiential" activity. And we will be doing more productions with even more exciting technology.
It all happens in a setting that nurtures self-esteem and the thoughtful risk-taking that takes place when we take a chance on friendship and on new experiences. Whether building a set for a play, journeying to Greece to learn about the progress of civilization and the theater, traveling to New York for a Broadway show or a peak backstage at Lincoln Center, or simply hiking the trails in Black Rock Forest, our location supports an academic program that makes all of this possible.
In the classroom, work requires sound scholarship, and students have an opportunity for AP and honors classes in subjects such as English Literature and Calculus, as well as acceptance into the National Honor Society for qualified juniors and seniors who have compiled an outstanding record in academics, leadership and community service. The Storm King School has one of the oldest Cum Laude Societies, and has been enrolling members since 1921.
We have a Learning Center for students who know they have organizational challenges or weaknesses they have carried with them too long. We started a Mountain Center Program for capable, college-bound students who have been diagnosed with learning challenges (perhaps an IEP) requiring different modes of instruction. In the latter, the faculty is trained to help the student manage and ultimately transcend the awkwardness accompanying these needs. Students are distinguished here by their fullest involvement in their work academically, in their work in the performing and fine arts, and no less in their team work in sports. Each arena requires decision making, energetic engagement, adaptation, and creativity. The latter is the true domain of anyone growing, exploring, and becoming. We review and celebrate each student throughout this time with us. Above all, our task is to find all the possible ways to stimulate and guide each student during these high school years.
We welcome you to Academic Life at Storm King, where we help you become connected to your education.
