Assistant Head of School / Academic Dean
The Storm King School Edline Community
Welcome!
The Storm King School’s academic program is focused on “inspiring students to academic strength and confidence” and fulfilling the promise of creating success from the potential that our young people brings to the Mountain. Our students arrive as bright, talented, and creative individuals, each with unique gifts which he or she will take to college and future success in communities around the globe. Our program joins the best of traditional preparatory education with innovative teaching practice in delivering our mission. At the heart of our success is the relationship between our teachers and students. Each student has an array of adults who facilitate that student’s learning and help develop the academic and life skills needed for success. Our teachers are dedicated to developing not just academic knowledge but also the confidence each student needs to use that knowledge to reach their own dreams. Storm King is deliberate in making the student-teacher relationship the heart and center of the work we do. Every part of our program, each class, team, club, and weekend activity is an extension of this purpose and the tools we use to accomplish it. In doing this, we continue a tradition of teaching and learning that extends back to the school’s founding in 1867. Those of us who have dedicated our careers to teaching young people and who live on the shoulder of Storm King Mountain understand well that there are few better places to accomplish these goals. In her recent song “Storm King” popular singer Dar Williams articulates the cycle of growth that the Mountain and our school witness every year and those of us who teach here know so well:
The storm king has borne the seasons all,
Worn them upon his brow,
He guides the watchful boats below,
I am the storm king now.
He is bemused, sometimes delighted,
Sees the trains, the hikers on the hill
In our progress and our industry
May we grow better still.
The storm king has seen us from above,
Rising up on the starboard bow
He knows the turning of the years
I am the storm king now.
The storm king has borne the seasons all,
Worn them upon his brow,
He guides the watchful boats below…
We invite you to come to the Mountain, to see and experience the work of our faculty, the growth and talents of our students, and the beauty of this place.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Lamb
