THE LEARNING CENTER:

The SKS Learning Center is a flexible resource empowering students academically, socially and personally.

Using differentiated-instruction strategies tailored to individual learning styles, the Learning Center Specialist meets individually and/or with small groups of students (two, three, or four) for scheduled sessions two or three times a week—although some students "hang out" in the center whenever their schedules allow!

The Learning Center Specialist attends classes where students have difficulty and re-visits the materials, coordinating learning strategies and methods with the teachers to enhance the effectiveness of instruction. At the Learning Center, students have the opportunity to become more confident and effective learners.

The Learning Center goals are to:

• Maintain the student's inclusion in the regular classroom
• Practice strategies for critical reading and reasoning
• Enable students to strengthen self-esteem in the academic arena
• Guide students to develop and maintain systems for managing schoolwork, extracurricular responsibilities and free time
• Provide students with organizational techniques to fit their needs and styles
• Provide support so that their natural talents may be demonstrated 
• Teach students to be constructive advocates for themselves in and out of the classroom
