Over 80 alums came back to the Mountain to join their friends and
teachers for three days of fun and reminiscing. Friday evening we
cruised the Hudson River on a fantastic sunset boat ride. The following
day, Saturday, we joined together for a memorial service to remember
our fallen classmates, enjoyed a BBQ lunch on the Ledoux Terrace, went
for a hike up to Spy Rock, and celebrated with cocktails at the Awards
Dinner. Then on Sunday we indulged in a delicious Father's Day Brunch
that was followed by a docent led tour of The Storm King Art Center.
Some in attendance were 14 classmates from the class of 1960
celebrating their 50th, Senator Robert Torricelli '70, teachers Paul
Davis, Diethard Kolewe, Bill Cesario, Gould Colman, Dr. Leslie McLean,
Jack Armitage & Robert Went who received the Margaret Clark Faculty
Excellence Award. The Alumni Awards dinner inspired many tear-stained
cheeks, endless smiles and echoes of laughter. P.J. Cunningham '80
serenaded us with his song about Storm King before Danny Mojica '85,
Jon Wolf '72 & Lawrence Pleasants, III '60 (who was unable to
attend, Racey Gilbert '60 accepted on his behalf) graciously accepted
their inductions into the Sports Hall of Fame. The prestigious
Founder's Cup Award was presented to B. DeRacey Gilbert '60 and Joseph
W. Blount '74. Jason P. Milliren, Assistant Head of School, began the
awards ceremony with a beautiful speech written by Dr. Leslie McLean
that seemed to say it all…
"Wherever we've been, wherever we
are, wherever we go, it is always a special time when we go home.
Getting ready for the trip, we begin to remember. We wonder if, and
hope that, certain people in our past will be there to share the
stories. We already feel the joy and contentment of sitting around with
old friends. The words are not really important - just that we are
there together is enough. The beauty around us is full of memories
that bring back laughter and a special serenity. It is good when we go
home. So from wherever you came, you are there. Welcome home!"
