What happens when cobalt blue is put next to sienna? How does negative space work in a sculpture or drawing? And what's the ideal page layout for the SKS arts magazine?

Visuals Arts at SKS provide students with hands-on experience. Whether the student is just trying out a photography class or preparing for a career in industrial design, we believe that the more art techniques students understand, the more freedom they can enjoy as artists. Our curriculum is designed to stimulate creativity and enhance visual literacy. Students hang their works throughout the campus, host exhibitions for the SKS community, and reproduce their work in the school arts magazine.

SKS students follow a traditional art-foundation program. At every step of the way, they are encouraged to explore their own interests and ideas for art-making assignments, whether in watercolors or in graphic design.  Studio activities often involve problem solving with specific materials and techniques. Drawing and composition are emphasized at every level of study, along with the value of constructive criticism. Students receive individual feedback from our accomplished instructors and from classmates through group critiques.

For those interested in pursuing visual arts professions, our art teachers and college counselor provide valuable guidance on arts careers and art-school applications.  Students who do go on to study art in college leave SKS fully prepared—complete with a college portfolio—for the demands and expectations awaiting them.

"...after 4 years at RPI and 1.5 years at Cornell, I still think teachers at SKS care about the students the most, that's the good thing about a small school." Joyce '04
